For further differentiation, students can each have their own chart, piece of paper or phonics related craft that they add words to.
During Work on Writing, student may finish an entire piece or may work on one piece of writing for several weeks. It is totally up to them.

Students use art supplies to create a visual representation of what they hear in the poem that they have read or that has been read to them. The art supplies can include drawing, play dough, legos, watercolors, etc.
What can you imagination turn a box into? A hot dog stand. a dog, a maze, a train – what can you come up with?

A great way to introduce this center is to do it as a whole group. Engage students by highlighting how silly the stories can get, the unexpected twists and turns of where the story goes, & how that’s the fun of it. This is also a great SEL moment to highlight how we all think differently and the value of everyone’s ideas.
– Use dry erase markers to trace over laminated handwriting packet page.
– Use a magnetic drawing board (an etchasketch with a pen). Use sharpies to draw the handwriting lines. Then, have your students practice their handwriting.

– How many real words can you make?
– How many nonsense words can you make?
– Can you sort the words between real words and nonsense words?
To increase engagement, this can be paired with the fidget spinner. The spinner would be used as a timer – how many can you find before the spinner stops spinning?
