A HUB FOR LEARNING AND EDUCATION
The Contemporary Classroom is a hub for learning & education. This is a place filled with conversations about education & child development and opportunities that foster learning.
Below are some words adults can use to introduce MakerSpace and being a Maker to a child:
Before reading: Today, we are going to learn all about what a Maker is. The little girl in this story is a Maker. Let’s read to see what that means.
After reading: We are going to get to be Makers. What are characteristics of makers? {Answer: make stuff, stick to it, keep trying}.
Exactly! While we are making, we want to make sure we are staying within our space – our MakerSpace. This is the area where we have our supplies and have space to make.
Okay, today you can either choose to make The Most Magnificent Thing you can think of using the supplies laid out OR we can choose one of the MakeSpace activities on The Contemporary Classroom site to do.
Optional: Read the story “Balloons Over Broadway” as a way to spark creativity, ignite prior knowledge, and teach about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade history.
During this activity, Makers make a float that they can parade around! It may be helpful to talk about how floats can be about a certain theme or about something you really enjoy.
Some basic materials that might be helpful to have: a egg carton or box, construction paper, glue, tape, string to pull the float.
“Extra” materials that might be fun to have: googly eyes, stickers, markers, crayons, faux feathers, straws, pipe cleaners, glitter, etc.
What can you imagination turn a box into? A hot dog stand. a dog, a maze, a train – what can you come up with?
